Mentor Lumber has gone through some big changes in recent years, start- ing with the appointment of new President Tom Kirk in 2019. The compa- ny also recently appointed two new division sales managers, Don Bowling at the Chardon division and Justin Ball in Mentor. A new leadership team that is unified in its goal of constant improvement is only the beginning of the changes. Mentor Lumber is improving facili- ties, equipment, and technology, implementing rigorous new staff training, and providing innovative building solutions to builders and remodelers. It’s a vision that aims to help Mentor Lumber continue to be the profes- sional resource that builders go to. Tom Kirk Appointed President, Mentor Lumber and Supply Tom has been with Mentor Lumber 27 years, for most of that time leading installed sales until his appointment as President in 2019. Tom has clear priorities for the company: • To ensure that the professional building materials dealer has superior products and services like no other lumberyard. • To provide innovative building solutions and services to northeast Ohio builders and remodelers. • To improve showrooms and facilities, and update equipment and tech- nology. Mentor Lumber has improved its inventory management systems, created a central dispatching system, and improved IT and point of sale systems. “All of our equipment is brand new, which was a huge invest- ment,” he said. • To make extensive improvements in the training of new team members. Onboarding team members now go through extensive training including cross training to gain a broad understanding of all aspects of the business, in order to provide customers with the excellent service they expect from Mentor Lumber. Further, there is a new emphasis on hiring team members with a great personality, strong work ethic, and a motivation to succeed. “We’re estab- lishing a culture that is team-orientated,” Tom said. “We’re really proud about reaching 100 years, but most importantly it is about our team going forward, for the next hundred years.” That team-building includes finding ways to bring new talent to Mentor Lumber, and making the company an attractive place to work through im- proved facilities and supportive training. “We consider ourselves to be the professionals in the industry. A box store has people who can help you find things, but when customers come to Mentor Lumber, our highly trained team knows everything there is to know about windows, doors, millwork, the whole range of products. “We strongly believe in our core values: A commitment to excellence, teamwork and respect in all that we do,” Tom said. Mentor Lumber’s goal is to be the No. 1 independent lumber yard in north- east Ohio, the one that everyone is talking about and wants to go to. Men- tor Lumber provides quality building materials and services to meet your needs, from hands-on product displays in their showrooms to installed ser- vices such as installed trim, decks, and siding, to kitchen design, to custom millwork, plus the latest doors, windows, decking and more.
