A box store has people who can help you find things, but when customers come to Mentor Lumber, our highly trained team knows everything there is to know about windows, doors, mill- work, the whole range of products. “We strongly believe in our core values: A commitment to excellence, teamwork and respect in all that we do. ” -Tom Kirk One way the company is addressing today’s challenges is by enhancing its delivery systems. “Delivery is one of our biggest areas where we can improve efficiency,” Justin said. “We’re in the process of integrating technology into delivery,” he said. Both locations will use one central dispatch model where tickets go to one yard to be dispatched accordingly, taking into account factors such as available manpower. Mentor is also using tablets to take photos of loads as they are ready to be sent out, with the pictures sent to dispatch to help ensure lumber packages are ready to go. “With pricing high and ever changing, we’re shipping complete house packages even prior to foundations being poured,” Justin said. “We have to make sure those packages are complete and without any issues.” Justin also aims to help keep Mentor Lumber and Supply a place where people like to work, and will stay long-term. “We have a leg up with our experience,” he said. “Our average employee in Mentor has been here 12 to 15 years, so we don’t have tremendous turnover.” There are a number of retirements expected in the next few years, in fact the company is planning to replace 250 combined years of experience due to retirements. “We have some retirements, but we’ve been able to fill those positions with people who have experience,” he said. Justin also aims to help keep customers informed. “We send weekly up- dates, and we let customers know of any pricing increases,” he said. “Re- garding lead times, we do our best to say ‘this is what we’re being told, this is what we’re seeing.’ We don’t want to leave anyone surprised; we want to be upfront.” In addition to a companywide focus on improving facilities, technology, and training, Justin said Mentor Lumber’s focus on quality products sets it apart. “We offer quality products. Mentor Lumber has always hung our hat on always sending out the best products. We never look for something from our vendors that is cheap, we want to be able to stand behind our product and let our customers know it is the best. Some lumber yards make a quick buck, that is not us,” Justin said. Tom agrees. “The quality of our materials is a huge plus. We look for the best quality before we purchase a truckload of material. We’re very partic- ular about both our products and services,” Tom said. When not working, Justin and his family including wife of 12 years and children Jacob, 10, Reagan, 8, and Max, 5, enjoy sports. Justin’s wife teaches, and is currently taking their kids to the zoo, children’s museum and other summer-break activities. Working Toward The Next Hundred Years Tom said both Don and Justin fit well into Mentor Lumber’s vision for the future. The company believes in hiring and promoting from within and giving current team members the opportunity before hiring from outside. He said both new division sales managers have taken full ownership in the values Mentor Lumber is prioritizing for the future, and the new team will work together toward a successful start to the next hundred years.
